It was a pretty good day for West Cork at the Ballincollig Open, the last Munster Ranking of the season (and its only March!).
James Kelly dominated the U-15 event winning his third U-15 Ballincollig Title in a row without dropping a set. This was James’s last Munster Ranking at U-15 and he remains undefeated at his age group for 3 years in a row, club mate Niall O’Driscoll reached the Plate Final finishing in 9th place in the rankings.
Erik Olsson went into the U-13s as the Top seed but found the pressure too much as he crashed out in the last 16, however he was consoled with his overall season results which put him inside the top three. Erik also played at the U-15 level and claimed 7th place and 8th for the season. He pushed Kevin Browne very close in the quarter-final.
Mair Kelly started slowly after a very early journey up to Cork and was disappointed to lose her first match of the day, however she recovered to win the other group matches comfortably 3-0 this meant she had to face the eventual winner Kerry in the semi finals. She turned her first round lose into a 3-0 win in the 3rd/4th play off to finish third on the day and scond overall for the season.
It was late in the season for Saoirse O’Connor to make her debut in the U-13 Girls Rankings but she secured fourth place after ousting team mate Jasmine Kelly in the quarter-finals. Jasmine finishes 5th for the season.
Suki Kelly, playing her first full season, finished 5th on the day at U-11 and 3rd for the season, a feisty competitor who is sure to continue to improve in this event next season.
Thoughts now turn to the West Cork Primary Schools Team Championships on Monday 23rd and with the Irish National Junior Championships next weekend, more West Cork Rankings scheduled, the West Cork Secondary Schools Championships, the All-Ireland School Qualifiers, the Interpros and the International Youth Cup in Belgium our season is far from over!
