Ballincollig Open 2014 - West Cork Report
Report & pictures: Owen Kelly
Another great day’s competition up in Cork, this time at the Ballincollig Open, the third of the Munster Rankings this season.
The day started off with James Kelly and Niall O’Driscoll our only players in the U-18 Boys' event. They were both well pleased as James went on to finish 4th overall and Niall collected a runner’s up medal in the plate. West Cork were in amongst the trophies yet again as Mair led our charge in the U-18 Girls beating off the challenge of both of the Kinneigh Girls and her British League team mates Kerry and Shelly. Chloe was too much to handle but Mair was delighted with her form and to finish 2nd in the event.
Erik Olsson battled his way through to the last 16 in the U-13 Boys but was unhappy to get knocked out at that stage with his sights set on a ¼ final placing but it was a close run thing and he went into the U-11s with something to prove and his win against No.1 Mathew Pop in the semi-final was great consolation for his earlier disappointment - he lost 2-0 to Isaac Leahy in the final.
Aaron Olsson also enjoyed his event picking up the U-11 Plate winner’s medal. Jasmine Kelly played in her first ever U-13 Girls event and was surprised and delighted to receive her Plate medal. Suki Kelly also made her Munster Debut at U-11s to make it four Kelly's for the day! Jasmine won the Plate Runner’s Up medal.
It was a great day in the U-15 Events with James Kelly going for his sixth Ballincollig Title in five years! And this he did in fine style against Niall Brown, unfortunately the quarter-final saw the clash between James and Niall O’Driscoll, but Niall was well happy with his sixth place finish - his highest this season.
In the girls' event Amy Dorrington is getting stronger with every tournament and shows some impressive if somewhat inconsistent form and we look forward to seeing her feature in the future.
So all in all some really good results, a well run event and some happy faces! What more could you ask for?
