The third in this season's West Cork Ranking Series took place on Sunday 6th April in Goleen.
The action was spread out over eight divisions.
A few newcomers took up the challenge and one of them Kyle O’Leary from Bantry claimed the Division 8 title at his first try over Ryan McSweeney of Schull and Suki Kelly of Goleen. Ryan O’Leary (Bantry) took the Division 7 title with recently promoted Sean Cronin (Bantry) 2nd and young Aaron Olsson from Goleen in 3rd. Rory Fitzgerald (still an Under-9) continues his climb up the rankings taking the Division 6 title on count-back against Jasmine Kelly (Goleen) and Niall O’Keefe (Bantry). Division 5 had another very close result with Milan Vearncomb (Lowertown) seeing off Hugh Fitzgerald and Maya Mukerjee from Bantry.
Fast tracking Lukas Ahles won his second division title in a row and will move into the heady heights of Division 3 with his victory against Under-9 Eoin O’Neill (Bantry) and Lewis O’Regan (Lowertown). Botand Rozsa (Bantry) rose like a phoenix back into Division 2 after seeing off the challenges from Luke Watson (Durrus) and Dylan McCarthy (Bantry).
Amy Dorrington celebrated her birthday in style and will be back into the top division at the next event after securing the Division 2 title. Tadgh Reidy (Goleen) playing in his first ranking this season took a fine win against Amy but finshed 2nd above Ballydehob’s Oisin Barrett.
The Division 1 Title was successfully defended by local girl Mair Kelly over Peter Dorrington (Skibbereen) and Erik Olsson saw off the challenge of Clive Spencer (Skibbereen) but only by the narrowest of margins in a 5-set thriller.
Each Division Winner received a trophy along with some WCTTA Souvenirs donated by Tony Higgins of the Tralee Club, also thanks to Peter Dorrington who donated a box of chocolates for all the players.
West Cork Rankings
After three events the best two scores count towards the ranking points, when players have equal points they are separated by their overall total scores. Players who have only entered one event will slip down the rankings. This however doesn’t affect our divisioning system
Mair Kelly from Goleen and Schull CC currently tops the West Cork Rankings with two wins out of three events and will be difficult to overtake at this stage. Our highest ranked adult is Peter Dorrington who lives in Drimoleague and trains at the Skibbereen and Goleen training schemes.
In third place is our top U-15 Boy James Lavin from Bantry who has made a welcome return to the sport. Niall O’Driscoll is in 4th and unfortunately will not feature in the rankings this season after damaging his ligaments in a PE lesson at school but we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return next season.
Erik Olsson from Crookhaven and training in Goleen is our No. 1 U-10 Boy at 5th and he has the same ranking at Irish National level!
After Amy’s Division 2 win she moves into 6th and is our highest ranked U-13 Girl. Louise O’Donnell from Bantry is our highest ranked U-12 Girl at 11th closely followed by Alisha McCarthy at 12th. Eoin O’Neill from Bantry is our highest ranked U-9 and is currently ranked 19th.
Aaron Olsson is our highest ranked U-8 at 35th with Suki Kelly our top U-8 girl at 42nd.
The next ranking event will be in May
